August was a wonderful month in San Francisco! We hosted our last holiday group, Nacel from France. We hope all our holiday groups had an amazing time here, and that they will come again next summer. This month our students enjoyed activities outdoors, such as the Outside Lands festival in Golden Gate Park. Our students discovered new bands along with old favorites, and had a great time!

Deirdra “Dee” De Pree is originally from Hong Kong where she was born and raised. Her parents were missionaries. She has taught English both in San Francisco and in China, and she can speak English and Cantonese. She enjoys teaching ESL because of the friendship she forges with students. In San Francisco she likes walking along the Embarcadero, going hiking and working out at the gym.
On Saturday, September 10, The San Francisco Italian Athletic Club welcomes everyone to North Beach for the 2011 Festa Coloniale Italiana, a celebration of Italian-American heritage that has existed in San Francisco for generations. Along Stockton St., between Union and Filbert sts., there will be continuous live Italian music, beer, wine, and Italian food.
On September 17th on Treasure Island, we celebrate the San Francisco Dragon Boat Festival a free weekend of world-class dragon boat racing, spectacular cultural performances, and fun-filled activities at the largest competitive dragon boat festival in the United States. The festival features 110 dragon boat teams and 3,500 dragon boat paddlers racing 500 and 300 meter courses.
On Sunday September 25th we celebrate the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival in The Presidio on the Presidio Main Parade Grounds lawn. It’s a live play featuring the works of Shakespeare. Bring your friends, dates, a blanket and a picnic to enjoy the 29th season of free professional theater throughout the summer thanks to The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival.

“Hi, I’m Romina and I’m from Chile. I would absolutely recommend GEOS to other students studying English, I had a wonderful experience! All moments at GEOS were great and I liked so much being here. I meet so many friends and the teachers were very good —everyone always answered my questions! The team was very friendly at GEOS too, I went to Coit Tower with staff and it was so fun!
I also like that in GEOS I learned grammar. That was very important to me because now I have the ability to speak better to people. At GEOS I learned the theory and now I can apply it! I also love San Francisco, my favorite place is the Embarcadero. I also love Golden Gate Park and Golden Gate Bridge and Lombard street is beautiful. If I could describe GEOS in one word it would be ‘great’!”
Paula Romina Tuma Zeidan, Chile
GEOS is offering three elective courses: Power Speaking, Grammar and Academic Writing.
Our Grammar course is available to our beginner students (Levels 1 and 2) to develop and enhance grammar skills while listening, speaking, reading and writing English. Special focus is on the language skills needed to communicate and understand basic needs in an English speaking environment. Power Speaking is available to high beginner and intermediate students (Levels 3 and 4) to improve confidence, clarity and accuracy in their speaking. Students will learn to communicate clearly and effectively. Students will give speeches, participate in debates and lead discussions, which will be recorded for feedback purposes. In our Academic Writing elective, (levels 5 and 6) students will write essays, book reviews, reports and summaries required in university level courses. Students will learn how to write an academic essay with a thesis, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. This elective course focuses on refining writing skills.
This month we welcomed many study tours to our school. Look below for some great pictures:
