September is a warm and wonderful month in San Francisco, known to locals as our secret summer. This month we celebrated Festa Coloniale in North Beach, the Autumn Moon Festival in Chinatown, the Dragon Boat Festival on Treasure Island and the Polk Street Blues Festival. With so many opportunities to enjoy good food, music and culture outdoors, GEOS students can experience everything San Francisco has to offer.

Meet Michelle Pastor! Michelle was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated with her B.A. in American Studies and Literature from U.C. Santa Cruz. Michelle was inspired at a young age to become a teacher and has devoted much of her time to working with youth of all ages in various subjects. She has spent the last year teaching in Florence, Italy where she fell in love with the Italian language, culture, and food. Teaching ESL has allowed Michelle to combine her passion for teaching and learning about different cultures all into one. She loves to create a classroom environment that celebrates culture and diversity all while speaking and learning the English language. Michelle spends a lot of her free time enjoying the local sights of her hometown, which include everything from visiting Crissy FIeld on a beautiful day to discovering new (and old) local restaurants! Along with her love of food, Michelle loves to read, dance, and watch her favorite local Bay Area sports teams.

“Hi my name is Peter and I am from Vietnam. To be honest I really have a good time at GEOS because this school I can learn culture and know more about other things I didn’t expect. My classmates very friendly and teacher very enthusiastic. I’m sure that my English and my education are very improved. GEOS give me opportunity to learn and discover. My last day I feel choked up because I didn’t say goodbye with my classmates and I will miss them. GEOS employees always very enthusiastic and we have many friends from another worlds. I don’t have enough words to describe it. The first day I came here I have a little bit scared and I start on the wrong foot. But right now every day we are friendly. I like San Francisco for many reasons: first the weather is very nice because I don’t like snow or too hot. Another thing, people in San Francisco is very independent. You can do whatever you want and be whatever you do. San Francisco has various cuisine and me and my friends enjoy lots of shopping center, urban centers and really good public transportation. People here are so friendly. My word for GEOS is “so amazing.” I can’t get enough of time at GEOS. I will recommend it.” Cong “Peter” Nguyen, Vietnam
GEOS is offering two elective courses: Communicative Grammar and Academic Writing.
Our Communicative Grammar course is available to our beginner students to develop and enhance grammar skills while listening, speaking, reading and writing English. Special focus is on the language skills needed to communicate and understand basic needs in an English speaking environment.
In our Academic Writing elective students will write essays, book reviews, reports and summaries required in university level courses. Students will learn how to write an academic essay with a thesis, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. This elective course focuses on refining writing skills.
